First Newsletter, Scrap Quilts part 1.

Hello Everyone!
Welcome to my first ever newsletter. I am very excited that you decided to join me on this adventure. I just posted my latest answer. What am I supposed to do with all these scraps? Part1. This quilt is made from some of the scraps I organized. When I threw these scraps onto my design wall, I asked my husband which layout he liked the best. He chose this layout then asked if I could make it queen sized for our bed. He is my biggest fan and never asks for anything, so I couldn’t say no. Unfortunately, there weren’t quite enough of the 2 ½ mid value blocks in the pile that I had cut. In the article I mention that I left any fabric less than 3 inches wide and more than 8 inches long as strips. Well, I don’t have any 2 ½ inch strips left any more. They got turned into blocks for this quilt. 😉
You can see some of the different layouts I tried belos. Click on the thumbnail to see the full image.  This pattern is a variation of a Jacob’s Ladder block. A normal Jacob’s ladder has all the 4-patch blocks in the same orientation. I tried flipping the 4-patch blocks in the upper right and lower corners to see how that would look. I don’t know if it has a name. I am sure that I am not the first person in history to try this, but I didn’t find it in my Google or Pinterest searches. The change is subtle. In a normal Jacob’s ladder, the center block inside the large colored diamond would be white with a colored border, instead of a 4 colored block with a white border.

I promised that this month’s newsletter would include a free pattern. Above is the quilt top and you are in luck. Because I messed up and made this a little bit bigger than queen size, I decided to include instructions for 3 different sizes for this quilt. A lap size (62” X 62”), a Queen Size (99” X 87”), and an oversized Queen (109” X 87”).
Here is where I ask for a favor. This is also my first ever published pattern can you please give me some feedback and constructive criticism.
Next month will be Scraps part 2, Using Contrast to add Depth to Scrap Quilts?
Thanks for reading.

  1. I’m going back to the beginning and making a hard copy of your instructions and news letters! These are so good, I’d hate to lose any of them!
