Newsletter July, 2021. Top of the Stairs

This is my Fourth Disappearing Quilt pattern. This one is a Disappearing Pinwheel I call Top of the Stairs.
I have a  YouTube video for you demonstrating this pattern  https://youtu.be/MLHNvfbHW5U and at the end of the video are two more  layout options

This pattern uses only 2 colors and can be made any light and dark fabric.
The quilt here 45″ X 45″ and is made of thirty six 7 1/2″ finished blocks, arranged 6 across by 6 down.  I used 1 2/3 yard of light fabric and 1 2/3 yard of dark.  These measurements don’t include binding or backing.

I made this with 5 1/4″ squares of fabric which were turned into 4 3/4″ Half Square Triangles (HST).

You will need two light squares and two dark squares for each block.

This will make 4 Half Square Triangles (HST).
Rotate the HST’s to make a Pinwheel Block.

For this quilt you will need 72 squares of light fabric and 72 squares of dark fabric.  This will make 144 HST’s, which you will turn into 36 of these Pinwheel blocks.
If you want to make different sized blocks use the chart on my website: https://questioningquilter.com/chart

Make a cut 1 1/2” from the center seam. Turn the mat 90 degrees and make another cut the same distance from the center seam.  Do this until you have 4 cuts

This will result in 9 Sub-Blocks as shown here.  There are:
4 small HST’s
4 bar blocks
1 pinwheel block

Re-Arrange the Sub-Blocks as shown.

Sew the 9 Sub-Blocks together to get the finished block.

To make the center motif. Take 4 blocks and rotate them so that the white triangles are arranged to the center and the pinwheels are to the outer corners.

Now add the next round of blocks.  Notice that on each corner of the center motif, you add 3 blocks with the white triangle angled in.  This creates the illusion of overlapping tiles.

For the third round, make the corners like you did with the second round.  For the centers of each side take 2 blocks and arrange them like half of a tile.  This continues the illusion of tiles or stairs stacked on one another.

Here they are sewn toghether into a completed quilt.  You can make this quilt bigger by using larger starting blocks, or continuing to make more rounds.

In the last issue I asked you whether you wanted a Disappearing Pinwheel or Disappearing 4-Patch.  Well, as you can see, the Disappearing Pinwheel won, but not by much.  So, I am announcing in advance that the next article will be a variation of a Disappearing 4-Patch.

I have made a YouTube video showing how to make this pattern and if you stick around to the end, I have two more possible layouts made with these blocks. https://youtu.be/MLHNvfbHW5U
