This is my Fifth Disappearing Quilt pattern. It is a Disappearing 4-Patch, I call “Whirlygig Two Step.”
I have a YouTube video for you demonstrating this pattern
https://youtu.be/6rgjeUZjzXs and at the end of the video (and at the bottom of this email) is a sneak peek at next months design.
This pattern uses 3 colors, two primary colors and a very light background color. I think it looks best when the two primary colors are different values. The blue is medium dark and the orange is medium.
The quilt here 45″ X 45″ and is made of thirty six 7 1/2″ finished blocks, arranged 6 across by 6 down. I used 2/3 yard each of the two primary colors (blue and orange) and 1 1/4 yards of background (white or very light). These measurements don’t include binding or backing.
If you want to make a large lap sized quilt you can make it 6 across and 8 down for a top that would measure 45″ X 72″. This would require 1 yard each of the two primary fabrics and 1 2/3 yard of the background, not including binding and backing.
If you want to make different sized blocks use the chart on my website: https://questioningquilter.com/chart.

This uses 4 3/4″ squares of fabric.
For each block you will need:
One square of Primary 1 (blue batik in this example)
One square of Primary 2 (orange in this example)
Two squares of background (white in this example).
To make the 45″ X 45″ quilt you will need 36 squares of each of the two primary fabrics and 72 squares of the background.
To make the 45″ X 72″ quilt, you will need 48 squares of each of the two primary fabrics and 96 squares of the background. Sew these squares into 4-Patch Blocks. The blocks should measure 9″ X 9″ at this point.
Make 4 cuts each 1 1/2″ from the center seam. Turn the mat 90 degrees after each cut.

After you have made the 4 cuts you will have 9 sub-blocks as shown here.

Rearrange the sub blocks as shown here. This block doesn’t look like anything special, but the assembly does the trick.

Sew the 9 Sub-Blocks together to get the finished block.
Notice the white rectangle that is surrounded by the orange in the lower left hand corner.

Arrange the blocks together with that white rectangle surrounded by the orange all going to the center.
As you keep that white rectangle in the center, you rotate the blocks creating a whirlygig design in the center.

Sew These together to get a Whirygig motif.

When you put 4 of the Whirlygig motifs together, you see that you are making another whirlygig surrounded by the darker color.

Her is the final quilt. I love how the whirlygigs look like they are dancing around the quilt. Shout out to the Green Valley Quilters who helped me come up with the name for this quilt.
Please check out the YouTube video demonstrating how to make this quilt. https://youtu.be/6rgjeUZjzXs

This is a computer generated image of the quilt I will be making for next month’s issue, and I hope you will help me. I don’t have a name for this yet. It is a Disappearing Hourglass made with Black and White fabrics along with scraps.
Please tell me your idea for a name for this quilt in the comment section of this month’s YouTube video. https://youtu.be/6rgjeUZjzXs
At the end of the video, I also give the viewers a sneak peek at this quilt. I also ask them also for name suggestions.
Having all the names in the comments section will make it easier to keep track of them. If I pick your suggestion, I will give you a shout out in next month’s newsletter and video.
Thanks in advance for your help.
