Newsletter June, 2021. Disappearing Hourglass Ring Around the Rosie

Ring Around the Rosie Quilt top

Hi, This is my third Disappearing Hourglass pattern. Sorry that it was a little late, but I wanted to make a YouTube video for you demonstrating this pattern:
https://youtu.be/UmXTP3vuSr0

This pattern uses 4 colors and is a little more complicated that the previous ones, but the steps are simple and I know you are up to it. The quilt here 45″ X 45″ and is made of thirty six 7 1/2″ finished blocks, arranged 6 across by 6 down.  I used 1 yard each of the four colors.  These measurements don’t include binding or backing.

Pieces to make the hourglass block

I made this with 5 1/4″ squares of fabric which were turned into 4 3/4″ Half Square Triangles (HST). I used 4 different colors.
Pink and Dark Blue (combination 1)

Light Green and Dark Green (combination 2)

Each block is made up on one square of each color.

Contrary to what you might think, the half square triangles are NOT made with the color combinations.

Match the Dark Green with the Pink fabric to make two HST’s.

Match the Dark Blue with the Light Green to make two HST’s.

Sew the HST’s into Hourglass blocks as shown here. Make sure that the green HST’s are in the center and the Pink and Blue HST’s are to the outside.
For this quilt you will need 36 of these Hourglass blocks.

If you want to make different sized blocks use the chart on my website: https://questioningquilter.com/chart.

Make a cut 1 1/2” from the center seam. Turn the mat 90 degrees and make another cut the same distance from the center seam.  Do this until you have 4 cuts

This will result in 9 Sub-Blocks as shown here.

Re-Arrange the Sub-Blocks as shown.

Sew the 9 Sub-Blocks together to get the finished block.  It doesn’t look like much by itself.

Take 4 blocks and rotate them so that the Blue Squares with pale green triangles are all together.

When they are sewn together, I call this a flower motif.

When you put 4 flower motifs together, you will notice a star motif is created in the center with the dark green and light green pieces.

Here is the completed quilt using 4 colors.  Notice how the extra colors highlight the two different motifs.

Last issue I asked you if I should make a YouTube video and the overwhelming response was YES. Even though some of you said that you preferred the written pattern you thought a video would give me more exposure.

Well, I did it!

This pattern was just published to YouTube this morning:

My Disappearing Hourglass Variation- Confetti is also available: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeeamLzIdro.

I hope that you will like the video and subscribe to my channel. Likes (thumbs up) help the video show up higher on searches. And, if I get to 1000 subscribers, YouTube will start paying me. I am currently at 114 subscribers so I figure I am minutes away from making the big bucks. So, be sure to share this with your friends and family.

Let me know if you would like the next pattern to be a Disappearing Pinwheel, a Disappearing Hourglass or a Disappearing 4-Patch. Either drop me an email, or tell me your preference in the comments section of the video.

Happy Quilting,

Brita
